Some Choice Wines for Chocolates:

  • Sparkling wines have a light sweetness that makes them a good go-to for pairing with a wide range of chocolates. If you’re buying only a few bottles for your tasting, try putting one of these on your list.
  • Zinfandels have the fruity intensity that matches chocolate’s rich flavor. Choose them over the lighter reds that can’t match chocolate’s sweet strength.
  • Sherry has the power to accentuate nutty flavors. Pick one to complement confections topped or filled with nuts.
  • Ruby port has the full-berry flavor and sweetness needed to take on the richest and densest chocolate confections.
  • Madeiras are often overlooked, but good ones have the delicious complexity that matches their citrus and caramel notes with the similar ingredients that often star in filled chocolates.

Divine With Wine (or just for solo snacking)

Purchased these for use as wedding favors for the ladies (the gentlemen were offered the rye whiskey caramels). I wanted our guests, who mostly reside outside of New England, to experience these tantalizing truffle treats. The dark chocolates are to die for.

Perfect Combination!

These chocolates were the PERFECT pairing with the suggested wines! A beautiful variety for white and reds (my favorite of the four was the chevre & nib truffle). I had a couple of chocolates with each of four types of wine and they were all divine! Such a wonderful and decadent treat from my Valentine.

Taste The Difference

Farm-Fresh Ingredients

We make all our confections with the finest, freshest ingredients from family-owned farms and local gardens right here in Maine and nearby New England states. And we love using exotic ingredients from the tiny, far-off corners of the world, scouring from small, family farms so our dollars directly benefit other local communities as often and as much as possible.

A team effort

We use single-origin chocolates from producers in Latin America who treat the growers, harvesters, and flora and fauna on their lands with respect. Not only do they produce some of the best chocolate in the world, they create alliances with local producers, promote the preservation of innovative techniques, and develop sustainable production practices to last for years to come.

From our kitchen to yours

Kate Shaffer, artistic director and founder of Ragged Coast Chocolates, started making exquisite confections in her tiny, home kitchen on Isle Au Haut, Maine eight years ago. From truffles and caramels to cookbooks and baking mixes, Kate and her husband Steve have grown the company far beyond its modest start into an award-winning and nationally-recognized purveyor of the finest chocolates in the world.

These are by far the best chocolates I have ever eaten. I also ordered two boxes for a friend and she agrees that they are the best.
